Desexing & microchipping

Desexing

Desexing of dogs and cats is mandatory in South Australia.

All dogs and cats born after 1 July 2018 must be desexed by a registered veterinary surgeon:

  • before it is 6 months of age; or

  • within 28 days after the owner takes possession of the dog/cat; or

  • if the owner is granted an extension of time, before the day specified in the exemption.

For more information, please visit dogandcatboard.com.au/cats/desexing

Not only is desexing mandatory, it stops the cycle of breeding and reduces the cat population. All Hisses to Purrs cats and kittens are desexed prior to adoption without exceptions unless they are exempt due to health reasons (and we haven't had this happen yet!). Below, you'll find links to places that can assist with cheaper desexing. We've included rescues who offer 'last litter' programs in the case that your cat has had kittens. These rescues will desex your mum cat for free. Your little family of cats will go into the rescue's care and all kittens will be desexed, vaccinated and microchipped under the rescue before being placed up for adoption under the rescue. Be part of the solution. Don't give away your unwanted kittens on social media or Gumtree. Contact a rescue running a last litter program to ensure that the breeding cycle is stopped.

Microchipping

All cats must be microchipped with the microchip number recorded in Dogs and Cats Online.

In South Australia, all dogs and cats must be microchipped and registered in Dogs and Cats Online. Puppies and kittens
must be microchipped:

  • Before it is sold, or;

  • Before it reaches 12 weeks of age, or;

  • Within 28 days of an owner taking possession of the dog or cat, or;

  • If a veterinarian has granted an extension of time, before the extension of time has expired.

Microchipping is the only way to ensure that if your much-loved furry family member gets out and goes missing, it is
returned to you as soon as possible. All Hisses to Purrs fosters are microchipped prior to adoption. If you adopt from us,
we can also be listed as your secondary contact, that way, if something happens and you cannot be contacted, you can
be sure that your cat or kitten will be safely returned to you. Below you'll find links to places that offer cheap
microchipping. If your cat isn't microchipped already, please get in touch with one of the places below so your beloved
pet can be returned to you.
